COMPONENTS OF THE META MEDIA WORKSHOP

Essentially, the Meta Media workshop exploration consists of the following four components:

1. Introduction to Meta Media Workshops

This page introduces the workshop and provides all of the links to the various parts of the full workshop presentation.

2. The Teacher's Guide

This part of the full workshop presentation provides teachers with all of the information they will need to recreate the workshop or present the material in the workshop to others, either fellow teachers or their own students.

3. The Actual Hands-On Exploration

This part of the workshop presentation constitutes the sequence of specific activities, visuals and descriptive information that is the pre-algebra, algebra and geometry material to be studied.

4. The materials -- the actual physical manipulative, Dr. Super's Triangles and an activity sheet with puzzles on the front and back

If you wanted a print version of the Meta Media workshop, these 4 components could be approximately put together and printed as follows:

1. The opening homepage would be about a page or two in length.

2. The Teacher's Guide consists of two parts:

A. The introduction to the workshop. Effectively, this is the information that answers these questions on the opening page:

WHAT ARE THE COMPONENTS OF THIS Meta Media WORKSHOP?

WHY WAS THIS Meta Media WORKSHOP DEVELOPED?

HOW LONG DOES THE WORKSHOP EXPLORATION TAKE?

HOW SHOULD I PREPARE TO DO THE WORKSHOP OR PRESENT IT TO OTHERS?

HOW ARE THE NCTM STANDARDS COVERED BY THIS WORKSHOP EXPLORATION?

WHAT COMPUTER AND SOFTWARE DO I NEED TO DO THIS EXPLORATION?

HOW CAN I OBTAIN THE MATERIALS FOR THIS EXPLORATION?

HOW CAN I PREVIEW THE WORKSHOP WITHOUT ACTUALLY DOING IT?

DO I HAVE PERMISSION TO USE THESE MATERIALS?

B. The sequenced description of the actual workshop, ideas covered, answers to problems posed, teaching tips, etc. Essentially, this is the information that answers the question:

WHAT IS IN THE TEACHER'S GUIDE FOR THIS WORKSHOP?

3. The actual hands-on exploration consists of about a 35 page presentation packet. This is the information answering the question:

WHAT ARE THE ACTIVITIES IN THE ACTUAL WORKSHOP EXPLORATION?

The presentation packet has two components --

A. 33 visuals -- These are the graphic images that accompany directions or solutions for the various activities. Effectively, each visual would be a transparency that could be used in presenting an actual workshop for teachers onsite rather than on-line.

B. 2 activity sheets -- These are the puzzle sheets pictured at the top of the opening home page. They are titled Dr. Super's Triangles Puzzles and Fitz D. Pieces. They can be printed on a single sheet front and back.

4. The materials would consist of:

A. An 8 piece subset of the Dr. Super's Triangle Manipulative. The 8 pieces consist of 1 large, 3 medium, and 4 small triangles. The large and small triangles are the same color, the medium triangles are of a different color.

B. A single sheet with the puzzles for Dr. Super's Triangles on the front and Fitz D. Pieces on the back.

All of these components, together, are designed to enable teachers to do the workshop exploration on-line, to review the workshop off-line, to present the workshop to colleagues, and to adapt the contents of the workshop in the future to include relevant mathematics from the workshop in their own classes.

Thus, the workshop has been prepared in such a way as to provide teachers with an easy to follow (scan or skim) comprehensive review of what they experienced in the workshop exploration, whether that exploration is on-line or off-line (in person). The workshop activities are described in detail using the Frame-of-Reference Model just as they would be presented in an actual on site, hands-on workshop. Summaries are given of the many discussion points and topics raised in actual workshop. And, where appropriate, suggestions are provided to give an idea as to how this workshop could be presented for those teachers that are contemplating the use of the unit in their own teaching. The actual overheads that would be used during the workshop presentation or exploration are included both to help teachers "remember" the workshop and to provide a resource which they can use in their own teaching.
