Those who do the exploration in this Meta Media workshop, both teachers and students, will study several important concepts and skills in pre-algebra, algebra and geometry while they engage in algebraic and geometric thinking. They will:
-- solve several puzzles,
-- discover measurement and angle relationships,
-- write English sentences and algebraic expressions for those
relationships,
-- use the relationships to find the area and perimeter of a
complex geometric shape,
-- solve complex numerical problems with simple and intuitive
methods using the manipulatives.
In doing these actions, teachers and students will be experiencing directly ideas supporting the four core goals established by the National Council Teachers of Mathematics Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics. Those goals are:
-- Mathematics as Problem Solving
-- Mathematics as Communication
-- Mathematics as Reasoning
-- Mathematical Connections
